 Reducing hazardous substances in construction to safeguard the aquatic environment, protect human health and achieve more sustainable buildings

There are hazardous substances in many construction materials, thus informed decisions are needed when buildings are constructed and renovated – attention must be paid to hazardous substances when selecting materials and in the design, construction, renovation and possible demolition of the building. However, as knowledge in this field is limited, then it is important to guide different stakeholders to make the right decisions and choices. Accordingly, NonHazCity3 deals with hazardous chemicals in buildings, construction sites and construction materials and reducing their exposure.

In NonHazCity 3 project we will develop solutions at three levels:

  • strategic solutions for management procedures of construction
    and buildings (recommendations, policy instruments, standards);

  • practical/technical solutions for construction (technical guidance, fact sheet);

  • communication & education solutions (knowledge campaigns, training material).

“NonHazCity – a healthier city” is conducting pilot projects in seven municipalities along the Baltic Sea to test and implement various solutions. In Estonia, the project partner city of Tallinn will try out designing and constructing a kindergarten with less hazardous substances.

NonHazCity 3 (NHC3) is an extension project of NonHazCity (NHC1) and NonHazCity 2 (NHC2).
