Description

In February 2016, Marija was moving in a shared flat near the famous Belvedere palace. The location is great - in terms of public transport, nearby parks and the short walk to the inner city and the university. The rent is, unlikely for Vienna, very student friendly. However, this is probably due to the size of her room: 8,5 sqm. When she moved in, the room had only a bed, a table, a chair and a wardrobe, yet the room was full. So, there was too little space to work, too little space for the clothes to hang, too little space for architecture models. We decided to redesign the whole room, depending on Marija's needs, to use the 8,5 sqm as good as possible.

In April 2016, we finished the renovation. The bed is lifted up to give space underneath for shelves as well as clothes to hang. The new table is at the window side of the room and functions at the same time as a reading corner and as an access to the bed. The space underneath is used as storage for mostly architectural models and drawings.

Besides earning more space for storing things it was also important for us to think about how we can make the room look larger to avoid claustrophobic feelings. The table is in the height of the window cill. Due to the fact that you can stand, sit and lie there, the window seems to be from floor to ceiling. When you are at the reading corner or in the bed, you are able to see from street to sky. The decision to have the complete room, floor and furniture in white was made to get more light into the room and, as a result, making it feel better. Moreover, also to exhibit the personal items of Marija like her colourful clothes, her love for flowers and her homeland traditions as well as her own designed chair. The result of the renovation is a very personal and functional room, showing the interests and needs, the way how Marija likes to work, read and relax.
