HOUSE ON A HILL

Type:
residential building

Status:
building permit / estimated completion 2025/2026

Location:
Riga

The large wintergarden on the south-side of the compact house serves as a seasonal living space and visual buffer to the nearby street. The compactness of the design and the placement of the wintergarden helped to achieve an A-class energy efficiency rating with minimal amount of insulation and material used.
A high attention was laid on using as much as possible natural materials, such as timber for the structure and cladding, wood fibre for insulation and clay plaster and plywood for interior finishes. To avoid environmentally damaging plastics and foam insulation and to reduce the amount of concrete used, the building stands on a ribbon foundation with crawl space. The crawl space will easen future repair and retrofitting of the building's systems. Most of the interior walls are not load-bearing and can be changed if the need occurs.
